NY/NJ - two jobs, three moves
Hi! My question relates to the credit for NY income on my NJ state taxes.

I lived and worked in NJ from January through August, and during that time, I got a sign-on bonus from my future NYC employer. I then moved to NYC and worked in NYC from September - November. In December, I moved back to NJ but kept working in NYC. Using Turbo Tax (and talking with the state taxing authorities), I know the amounts that are taxed by each state and NYC (NJ taxes the amount I earned Jan-Aug, including the NYC-employer bonus, and Dec), and I've already filed my federal and NY taxes.

The problem is I have to report the amount of NY state tax I paid on the NYC-employer money I earned while a NJ resident to get the credit on my NJ taxes. I know the total amount taxable to NJ, and the total amount of NY state tax I paid (which was on all income earned in NYC, only part of which was taxable to NJ). Do you have any idea how to find out the breakdown of what NY state tax was from my time as a resident versus my time as a nonresident?

It seems like this type of thing must happen fairly frequently (i.e. New Yorkers moving to NJ partway through the year), but no one, including the taxing authorities, seem to be able to help me! Thanks for any guidance you are able to provide.

There seems to be a certain amount of pro-ration involved here. If I did your return, I could see the actual figures and be able to figure it out.

Determine your wage on a daily basis, then prorate based on the number of days in NJ versus in NY. That seems to be the logical way to handle it.
