Comments on Carriage House luxury shingles please? Compare to Hardie's?
    Hi there.

I am renovating my 33 years old house in Metro Vancouver. I want to replace the old and torn cedar shingles. A contractor suggested Carriage House luxury shingles by Certain Teed. Another suggested Hardie's shingles. Hardie is more expensive. What are the relative strength and weaknesses between the two please? Am I comparing apple to apple?

    Best regards,
    Francis

They are basically the same, cement based . See note below. Lots more weight than Cedar, have you considered a very nice Architectural Grade shingle?

Note the following:James Hardie cement-fiber shingles have a settled class action lawsuit filed against it for product failure and water leakage. A link to the lawsuit settlement is at http://www.hardieroofingclaims.com/default.html This web site should be carefully reviewed to learn about this lawsuit. The roof shingles are delaminating and crumbling which is a sign the roof shingles are failing.

    Many thanks for your reply.

    1. what is architectural grade shingles? Are they made of fibre glass?
    2. James Hardie's shingles are fibre cement but Carriage House luxury shingles are fibre glass. Don't understand why they are the same. Could you please explain? Thanks.

If the one is FG base and the other cement, how can you compare "apples to apples"? AG grade shingles are fiberglass with extra pieces added for shadow lines to make it look like slate. I would go with fiberglass base. I just cut and pasted the hyperlink. Google "Hardie roof shingles" and you should find it. CertainTeed used to make cement based products.
