    Toilet running and water surges
I know absolutely nothing about plumbing, but I am trying to figure out why my toilet keeps having water surges about every 30 seconds. It makes a surging noise like water is coming in, and when I check it, the water is rippling. Before this the water constantly ran in the tank, and I adjusted the valves which caused this new problem. Any help is most appreciated!

First off, The water level in the tank should be 1/2" below the top of the white overflow tube when the tank's filled and the ball cock is shut off. Check the linkage between the flapper and the flush lever. With the tank filled it should have 1/4" of play. If not adjust it. Next, run your finger nail around the seat and check for nicks or rough spots. If found, sand them off or replace the seat. Now check the hooks that secure the flapper. Are they both hooked on securely? And last check the flat sides of the flapper. Are they wavey? If so the flapper is faulty and should be replaced. If you still have a problem click on back with more details. Good luck, Tom

Toilet keeps running [ 2 Answers ]

I think I need to replace the 'float' system in the toilet. It appears, after filling, the float is not shutting off the water. I try to manually raise the float higher, but this does not work. While this is not a costly repair, could it be anything else?
