I am 53, taking care of my 88 yr old mother for the past 9 yrs. She needs 24 hr assistance. Up until a year ago I did this on my own, now my brother has stepped up and helps. Mom had a mental breakdown a short while ago, seemed she just snapped. Now she is back... mentally. She tends to forget that we are adults and able to make our own decisions and that she is not able to do certain tasks.
She and I argue over the smallest things Sometimes I feel we mutually don't like each other Get so tired of asking a question and the reply being "I don't care" "or whatever you want"
I will leave and go to work for a week or more. Best days for both of us. When I get back she is asking when I am leaving again. She doesn't want to go in the home, my brother can not be asked to do this 24/7. I want to run away... hopefully start a new life.. live again. Is it possible?
I apologize for whining.
Tell me if I am being selfish... give me ideas. I want her to be happy and comfortable.

I'm sure your mother felt the same way when she was raising you and your little brother. Now the tables are turned and she needs someone to take care of her rather than her taking care of you.

Are you certain that she isn't slipping into dementia or Alzheimer's?

Can she take care of activities of daily living by herself?
