I am trying to find the right kind of dog to buy.
I am trying to find the right kind of dog to buy. I need a dog that sheds very little. A medium size dog that is smart and a watch dog. I love shepherds but they shed too much. I do not like the looks of poodles, but I understand a mix of shepherd and poodle may not shed but they cost a fortune. Basically , I need a dog (mixed is fine) who doesn't shed much, is affordable and is also a watch dog (med size). Any ideas on good mixes I can look for? Thanks

Children, no children? Apartment or house? Home all day alone or are you a "stay home" person?

I love German Shepherds but, yes, they shed like crazy. I currently have a puppy, Rott/Shepherd mix. He's smart, protective, short haired.

I have always adopted from a shelter or rescue. I also love Labs.

Is this your first dog? You'd be amazed how many people post here and don't do any kind of research. You are the exception.

    Lucky dog!

    HI
I do have two children (14/12). I live in a house. I do work, but are usually home at nights. This is the first dog I am purchasing. I grew up with Shepherds but haven't had a dog in over 15 years. I got a couple books to read before I commit to a dog. I know the hair will drive me nuts so I have to get a dog that doesn't shed much. A poodle would probably be the best dog, but I don't think they are very cute. Intelligent, medium size, protective, doesn't shed. I would like to get a pup from the shelter or pound but not sure on what kind of mix to look for. I'm sure I'll have to get a mix so it won't be so expensive. Thanks so much for your help! :)

Make a list of questions and then visit a shelter and ask those questions. I too am all for adoption of a shelter dog. (I rescue cats.)

Any dog with brains will be protective - or so I always hope!

Rescues and shelters do have AKC dogs - I have an AKC German Shepherd I got as a pup from a rescue.

I think you need a dog that doesn't have a heavy undercoat - like GSDs have. I spend the majority of my life picking up after her. Have you gone to a shelter to see what's available, which dog appeals to you?

Don't forget to check out your local shelters! They have great dogs in need of forever homes :) Labs, while some can be high strung are great dogs for novice pet owners. Shelty, collies and the such also make great first time pets, all working breeds need LOTS of exercise and a firm hand when training, not meaning abuse or hitting, just someone who will make sure they are boss. I am a huge fan of the bully breeds, but they are not for the novice pet owner, they can be quite bull headed and forceful when they get the run of the house.

There's not a lot out there for medium sized dogs that don't shed, you would be looking for a dog with hair (think shih tzu) opposed to fur like collies etc... Again, bullies when brushed regularly tend to shed less, and there are some great adult bullies in shelters with their basics in training already down pat.
