I just bought a old toro engine off eBay from mower not self prop. Can I put this engine on my old self prop mower deck. It looks like same engine. Would an old pully work on this engine shaft? Thanks

THere is no way we can answer this as there are several different mounting patterns depending on what engine was used... and there are far more variations in the crankshaft blade mounts all of which MUST match the specific crankshaft style.

Yes I've mixed and matched things over the years.

Hi,
The important considerations are the length and diameter of the crank. If the old and new have those dimensions the same, probably will work.

Not that simple... some engines have splines... some tapered shaft... some use woodruff keys... and then you have the length as you stated.

Then the bolt patterns vary from engine to engine, where they bolt to the deck.

THen you have the safety features like blade brake etc... get self propelled and they magnify.

Yep... do this a lot as a hobby... 18 years now without buying a push mower to mow my yard.

Get free ones people with ZERO mechanical aptitude set out for the trash..

They have all lasted me more years than I can remember and actually had nothing that cost more than a can of carb cleaner to remedy wrong with any of them.

Decks fall apart before the engines die. Even keep my mother and brother supplied with lawnmowers for free too.

Depending on the type of deck... you can make the engine fit sometimes (usually the stamped steel decks) with a drill.

Well, the splinrs ought to be obviuos, and tapered are used on generators mostly. Bolt patterns have been standardized for most brands for a couple of decades. Most I have had to do is turn an engine an odd way. Measurements and directions can be found on most of the engine wholesalers site, such as Small Engine Suppliers - Your online source for Replacement Small Engines, Tools & Parts and just above the engine pictures are hoe to measure.
I, on the other hand, have been doing this professionally for over 35 years.

Well, Briggs, and the now defunct Techumseh... didn't share bolt patterns between them (none that I have had my hands on and that's been a lot over the years)... and none of them were several decades old. And just three years ago I five different ones I was tossing together for people and each one was different than the other. And every one of them meeded something different that didn't fit any of the others... the whole lot got tossed because I wasn't going to buy the parts and I didn't want partial mowers laying around.

I don't fix lawnmowers for a living, but I have three antique Mercedes that I have restored over the last 10 years... one with Bosche mechanical fuel injection the Benz dealer hosed up when the Previous owner had it.. that I had to set right. And have been repairing lawnmowers in a non-presfessional capacity for the last 39 years.

Not intending to be argumentative in the least... but I'm not the average homeowner that scratches his head when they don't start. I'm as comfortable working on these as I am EFI systems and diesel engines.
