Where is regulator on 16.5 hp engine lawn tractor

I know where stator is but not regulator

"stator" is that a typo? Brand and model of engine will help

May or may not have a regulator; could just have diode(s) instead.

The plastic gear on top of what I guess is the starter on model no.917-257631(craftsman 42') is worn down and Icannot find the part or part no. anywhere
