    Half-mile long extension cord
I want to run a small well pump about 2500 feet from my house. There is a pond at the other end of my property that has slowly dried up, and I want to run a shallow well to fill it back up.

I'm considering just putting a solar panel there, but I'm concerned that it may be too visible and could get stolen.

What would be involved in getting a five amp output, 115 volts, at that distance? Would I need to step up the voltage and then step it down? Not sure what the terms are for this type of equipment. Thanks for your help.

In general it's a good idea to size conductors so that the voltage drop is no more than 3% or so. To help you determine the appropriate cable size, see the voltage drop calculator here:

    Voltage Drop Calculator

For a 5 amp load at 120 volts with half circuit length of 2500 feet it looks like a 1/0 cable would do it.
