How much water pressure is in pressure tank
    Good morning,

I am having a water problem and need some assistance determining how to fix it. I have a weekend cabin which has a well. When we had it drilled in 2004 it was 315 ft deep and we could hear a river underground when we listened at the entry point. We decided that since there was sufficient GPM production to stop and set pump rather than possibly going through the bottom of the river and drilling 300 more ft.

For the first 3-4 years it was fine except we put a hardness system on the line and a large carbon filter from Lowe's. Later we added a chlorination injection system.

Here is the issue now. Over the last year or so there has been a dramatic increase in the level of sediment in the water. We had it tested and the following are the numbers.

    Hardness 16 gpg
    Iron 9ppm
    Ph 7.2
    Manganese 0 ppm
    Sulfur ppm (no number shown)
    Tannins 0 ppm
    Chloride 0 ppm
    Sulfate (S04) 0 gpg
    TDS 216 ppm

This was all tested prior to the in-line systems we have already.

Basically we have what appears to be clay in the water. It is a significant amount. The charcoal/filament filter that we currently have in-line is the biggest one Lowe's sells. It is approx.. 10” filter. It needs replacing after 5-10 days of use to avoid reduction in the water pressure.

We attempted to incorporate a sand filter in the system but used a swimming pool type filter which is designed for a maximum of 28 lbs of pressure. When we turn it on, if a faucet is open it works but when you close the system, the pressure pegs out the gage of the pool filter and it begins to creak from the pressure. It just isn’t designed for that pressure. I tried it in line prior to the pressure tank and after the pressure tank. Results were the same both ways.

    1. What is the normal pressure in the pressure tank?
    2. Am I doing something wrong or do I need a different type of tank rated for a higher pressure.

The pressure control switch determines what the pressure (bladder) tank is set at. It should be set 2 psi lower then the turn on point of the pressure switch. If your switch is set for 40 on 60 off, then your tank should be set at 38. The test for the tank is done with water off and tank empty.

The switch is adjustable, so you can lower the on/off psi. You can also buy a new switch with lower psi. Directions are inside cover.
