When the son was born mother was 27, means mother is 27 older than son
m=s+27..............(1)
8 years ago means we have to subtract 8 from their present ages
m-8=s-8
then mother was twice as old as son will be in 5 means we have add 5 in the age of the son 8 years ago
(m-8)=2((s-8)+5)
m-8=2s-16+10
m-8=2s-6
m=2s-6+8
m=2s+2...........(2)

Put the value of m from (1) to (2)
s+27=2s+2
s-2s=2-27
-s=-25
Multiply by (-1) both sides
-s(-1)=-25(-1)
s=25
Put the value of s in (1)
m=s+27
m=25+27
m=52
Present age of Mother = m = 52 years old
Present age of Son = s = 25 years old"

SOLUTION: This is an age old problwm. My mum was 27 when i was born. 8 Years ago she was twice as old as i shall be in 5 years, time. How old am i now

I think the child is 9 yrs. I can't explain how I got to that answer but will give it a go.
I worked mum out to be 36 now, so 8 yrs ago she would have been 28, which would make the child 14 in 5 yrs time hence the child is 9 now.
