How can I get a german citizenship as an american through my mother
I am German, my son is American, I tried even before 1977 to get a German Passport for him, could not get one. What can I do, he was born in 1971 in Australia but is American through his father and has an american passport.

The title says one thing and the question says another.

Assuming he is a US citizen he can't get a German passport. Likewise, if he were a German citizen he couldn't get a US passport.

I don't understand why you are trying to get a German passport for him. Why does he need one?

Yes, you have an American passport, he does not need any other.

But if this is your child and you are German and were German when the child is born, the child has German citizenship also.
But Germany and the US allows for dual citizenship. So you go though immigration and get his German citizenship reconised by his being your child and then you can get him a german passport also.

You do realize that this "chid" is some 35 years old, at least?

I believe when one reaches adulthood he must choose which citizenship to take.

They were already "German" at birth, and just need to prove citizenship.

A person born to an American who lived in Germany, and lived there for 50 years, is still an American citizen, they just have to prove citizenship by birth records.

You can have dual citizenship, both in Germany and in the US.

So they already are a citizen of both, just have to prove it though documents
