How should I file when I had income from both Canada and the US?
    Hello,
I moved to the US from Canada during 2011 and have income from both countries (from Canada it is Unemployment Insurance payments from the government before the move and interest income on bank accounts, from the US it is from employment).

When filing the US return is there a particular section, or separate document, I need to fill in to declare the income from Canada?

Also I'm assuming I'll have to file a Canadian tax return also and will need to declare the income from the US on there two. So my main concern is how to fill in the US and Canada returns so that I don't get taxed twice.

Does anybody have experience of dealing with this situation?

    Thanks

(Additional info: my wife is with me in the US and had no income either in Canada or the US; I'm here in the US on a H1 visa)

I cannot help you with the Canadian return.

If you file jointly with your wife, ALL world-wide income must be reported. You can file Form 1116 to claim the Foreign Tax Credit for the Canadian taxes you will pay.
