    Claiming dependent children under 18?
[F]I am told I cannot claim a dependent child (lives with us) once he turns 13. Is that true for either Federal or state (Massachusetts) taxes?

Whomever told you that is mistaken. The age cutoff is 19, and then only if the child makes more than $3,300.
