Old well tank to new bladder type
I have replaced an old well tank with a new bladder type. I do not know what a couple of valves on the old system are. One is a brass sleeve with 2 schrader valves on it and the other is a 3" square block that seems to spit air and water out of one cap side. Anybody know what these are? Thanks--------AL

Your old system worked in this fashion. When the pump turned off, there was a valve (probably the brass sleeve with the two schraeder valves) which allowed air to enter the wellpipe. The water column would drain all the way back to the pump. When the pump turned on, it would pump the air in the wellpipe up into the pressure tank. As you can imagine, doing that a few times would result in the tank being full of air. To prevent that, a float valve in the old tank would allow the extra air to escape when the tank became more than about half full of air.

It's a little hard to correlate all of that with what you are describing. Not too sure about the 3" square block. However, with a bladder tank, you really don't want the wellpipe filling with air. The bladder in your new tank keeps the amount of air constant in the tank. So, if you replaced an old tank with a bladder tank, you will need to be sure the wellpipe stays airtight.

Posting a couple of pictures would be helpful.

Thanks jlisenbe, I think I get it now. I will have to remove these valves or seal them off. The new tank works great. The old tank was galvanized and pretty rusty

If it's working, I wouldn't do anything I couldn't "undo". The only issue I see is the deal of pumping air into the tank. You wouldn't want that in a bladder tank.

Don't forget to charge your bladder tank. N Shut the pump off at the breaker and bleed the system down by opening a cold water faucet. Charge the tank with 2 PSI under the cut in point of your control box. If you cut in bat 30 PSI then charge the tank with 28 PSI. Good luck, Tom
