The 'chain' was pulled too hard and pulled out of the switch... Stuck on high.

I purchased a new switch (Westinghouse 3-Speed switch #77021).

I disconnected the wires from the switch (1-purple, L-black, 3-blue, 2-yellow). Since I only disconnected those four wires I didn't write anything down.

I have remounted the switch and reconnected the similar color wires... Purple to purple, blue to blue, etc.

I have a black wire coming in, and 1 unconnected wire in the fan hub... A white wire.

I touched the white and black wires together as a test... I got humming and slight movement.

So now what? I have other ceiling fans in the house (to look as an example) but I can't tell if any are the same manufacturer (we haven't replaced the fans since we bought the house).

I'm stuck and we need to use it tonight... It stays hot in the high desert of CA.

Without knowing for sure, the black wire should be the feed into the switch, or (L). The white would be a return or neutral which would connect to the white neutral from the fan.

I'm not really comfortable with this answer because I cannot see what you are looking at. Would you please attach a couple of pictures of the installation.

I took a couple pictures with my phone but I'm not sure if they will help. I'll try to provide a description too. And, before we start - I appreciate your help.

The problem switch is the off/low/med/high speed control. 4 wires; (starting with the pull-chain in the upper left corner point left) 1-purple, L-black, 3-blue, 2-yellow).

I can get better pictures but I'll have to get holding the wires back and in place.
