    patio questions
Hi there, we are about to rebuild our patio. Can anyone tell me how far apart one should place their 4x4 posts. I have a good grasp about the rest, but no info on support posts.
thanks and look forward to your responses.

Generally, your beam span (distance between the center of each post) depends on the size of the header beam you plan to use. Also, your local building codes will have specific requirements for footing size (the concrete support underneath each post) that is also determined by your span(s). Here's a standard for most Southern California cities:

Beam Spans: 4X6 Douglas Fir No 2 or btr. MAX. 8'2" for Lattice Cover 5'6" for solid cover
4X8 DF MAX. 10'1' for Lattice and 7'3" for solid 4X10 DF MAX. 11'8" for Lattice and 9'0" for solid 4X12 DF 12'4" for Lattice and 10'0" for solid. You can contact your local building department and they should be able to provide you with a "hand-out" that outlines their specific requirements.

There are a lot of variables that go into this. How high do you plan on having this deck ? What size lumber will you be using ? What is the Width ? What is the length ?
