    Hi Rjohnally,

You need to get two large pair of pliers or two wrenches of proper size and use them to loosen the nut(s). Use one plier (or wrench) to hold onto the body of the ptrap and the other plier (or wrench) to remove the nut(s). That should so it.

First, start with the cleanout plug on the bottom of the ptrap, if possible... may be all you need to do here to get that earring. After the plug is out run a little water and try to flush the earring into a bowl. To reinstall the plug put a couple wraps of teflon tape or use some pipe dope on the threads to reseal.

If that doesn't work then you'll need to remove the larger nuts to drop the ptrap out and try to fish the earring out that way.

Be clear that the ptrap could break so be careful, but if the earring is worth it you do what you need to do. We can talk you through ptrap replacement if needed, OK?

Finally, the earring could also be caught up in the neck of the sink drain so be sure to shine a flashlight down through the drain first so you can be sure that you can't reach the earring with a 24" grabbing tool (see image... sold at home depot and other home supply stores).

    Good luck!

If the pipe is plastic and joints are glued together, you will have to cut them. If they have nuts and somebody used putty on threads then you take channel locks and unscrew them with the tool.

Now, since you the trap in your hand, just flip it upside down and drain water into a bucket. Your earring should be there. No need to disassemble the trap completely - and reinstall it.

( ooops, posting at the same time as Mark )

If your trap looks like see the image below you just need to just loosen the nuts and like Milo say your ring will be in the trap, Thanks.
