Hi,

I am getting ready to finish my basement but my main panel is in my garage so I'm thinking it would make it easier for me if I install a subpanel in my basement. The main panel is 200 amp so I'd like to install a 100 amp subpanel. Is it okay to put in a 100 amp main breaker panel and feed it with a 100 amp double pole breaker from the main in the garage or should I get a main lug panel? Also I've been getting different opinions on the wire that needs to be run. Should I use #3 or #4? The run will be approximately 75 feet. So what type of cable should I ask for at the electric supply store? Thank you!

I probably should have mentioned that the basement will contain a bar area with at minimum a refrigerator and dishwasher. A bathroom, a theatre area with a lot of electronic equipment and someday maybe a hot tub. Also lots of lighting.

The wire can be a minimum #4 copper or a #2 aluminum. I would use a #2 - 4 aluminum wire SER cable. Will need to treat the connections properly with wire brushing, antioxidant compound and proper torquing. This cable is popular and readily available, and the least expensive.Will also need two 1" two screw squeeze connectors, one for each end of the cable. The cable will need to be protected if exposed to physical damage, or if passing through wood fraaming can use protection plates.

Not sure what type of #4 cable would be available, most likely MC cable, with metal sheathing, and copper is very expensive now.

The subpanel can have a main breaker , but does not need one. The subpanel will need a separate equipment ground bar for any and all ground wires from the branch circuit cables. The bare ground in the SER cable will connect to this also. This will leave the neutral bar in the subpanel isolated and just for neutral wires.
