A starting place would be about 12-16 days before your next period would be expected. Personally, I would start a week before that and continue through a few days after. Keep in mind that you may not ovulate within the norm, however, so pay attention for other possible signs that your body may be preparing for ovulation. An increase in more clear and slightly fluid discharge is common. If possible, having sex about every other day throughout a cycle, with a few more attempts when you believe you might be close to ovulation can be helpful.
Even with good timing, pregnancy can still take some time. Most couples will become pregnant within a year of actively trying, but some will naturally take longer.
To boost your chances of a healthy pregnancy and baby, start taking prenatal vitamins or a multivitamin with folic acid now while trying. Make any other lifestyle changes you know would be healthy... this goes for your partner as well. Avoid cigarette smoke as much as you can, eat healthy foods, get adequate rest, have some regular exercise, etc..
