I have a leak out in the yard, but cannot tell where the actual pipe is

Hi Jerry

If this is a main feed water pipe then you want to find the CURB STOP near the street and draw a straight line from the curb stop to where the main water feed enters your house.

If it goes through the "puddle" in the yard then you have found exactly where the pipe is. If the straight line misses the "puddle" in the yard then you may have water coming up at a weak spot in the ground and this will get slightly more complicated to finalize location... maybe?

Try determining the straight line as most water pipes get run straight in when possible and usually the leak is where the puddle is.

Otherwise, you can check with the local water department... they may have underground blueprint showing where the pipe crosses the yard.

This water supply line is located in a country home where from the road to the puddle is probably 700 feet. I suspect that the supply line is straight but we dug where the puddle is and could not find the pipe. The land is flat so I can't even tell if I am near the line or not, do you to know how a leak detection is performed? I would like to do this myself if possible.

Hiring a leak detection company will cost a little money, sure, but you will know where the leak is and if you are feeling up to it, where to dig to repair the line. There are several different ways to conduct a leak detection, either accoustics or trace gas detection will work well for your situation. In the Midwest, try United Leak Detection , if you live somewhere else, there is one around you. They will be able to find the leak to within inches.

Sorry, also, make sure the leak detection company will be able to locate the lines. If they are poly pipe, this can be a little tricky, but do-able. Copper pipe is much easier. Good Luck!
