For a first time offence it depends on the dollar amount and whether it's the US or Canada.

I would expect a fine and some sort of probation.

(This is not a Small Claims Court matter UNLESS you are being sued to make restitution; it's a criminal matter and it's offence, not a fence.)

Thank you for responding to my question. This has happen in the US. And the dollar amount was $125 that was what I was told.

My guess is a fine, stern lecture, possibly probation (in the form of stay clean for 6 months).

Be sincere and apologetic.

Maybe community service but I rather doubt it.
