I have a refigerator at my camp in n.h. its in a sceen house out of the weather.but the temp does drop down to below zero.I used to leave it plugged in year round.someone told me not to.they said it was bad to leave plugged in if the temp drops that low so I unplugged for the winter.the next spring it would not keep things cold.so I thew it out.thought its was old and just died because of its age.I got another used frige and unplugged that one also for the winter.same thing happed.I was told this was just a coinsidence.so I have gotten another used frige an not sure weather to plug or unplug for winter.these frige's are old I get them when I do kitchen a remodel and the people are getting new appliances but they running fine and being used up to the day the new frige comes.so again my question is do I plug it in or leave it unplug for the winter.

There is no true answer. If you leave it plugged in, it won't run when the temperature drops below 35 or so. If there is nothing in it, so what. If you unplug it, nothing will happen. One of the problems with below zero temps is that the compressor oil congeals and may not come back to a liquid state. The compressor is lubed by the internal oil and if it overheats can burn out.
