I have to replace the diverter spindel TA-25A
I have the parts, and the directions from this site on how to do it, but I need to know if I have to shut the main water off before I do this? Also, do they sell the handle removal tool at Home Depot?

    Thanks,

    David

    Hi David,

To replace the diverter spindle assembly for the symmons tub/shower valve you DO NOT have to shut off the water supply.

If you are having trouble removing the handle you can purchase a handle puller at any home improvement store. If the puller won't work then you may actually need to break the handle off and purchase a new handle and a new stem (TA-10) assembly and rebuild the whole thing... but please post back before breaking the handle off to discuss more last ditch options.

To remove the spindle assembly just remove the brass plate over the spindle with a 1/4" allen wrench to access the spindle. Then, remove the brass ring seen in the pic. Below... do NOT drop this. Then purchase a 5/16" x 3" lag bolt and screw it into the spindle about a 1/4" or so and then yank the spindle by the lag bolt using a pair of pliers (hold the body of the valve against yourself while yanking). Believe it or not, this is how symmons tells us plumbers to do this, too!

After the spindle is removed, install the new one but first grease the Oring with plumber's grease for longer life and better function, OK?

Reinstall parts and test... that should do it.

Any questions just let us know...

    Mark

The diverter for our guest bath leaks like a sieve, diverting very little water to the shower. The tub/shower set is American Standard, about 20 years old.
