AS a rule no record is is kept of the location of underground plumbing on your property. I can tell you this. If you have city water and sewer it's a safe bet they're located in the front. If you're on a well or septic tank the underground pipes will be found in back/

Mark your intended path with white marking paint or string. Call 811. It will set into motion for the utilities to come out and mark the locations of their lines if they are anywhere near where your digging.

Tom nailed it with the City and Record keeping on private properties...

As KISS mentioned in his post - in my area, we also call 1-800-DIG-ALERT number. Utilities peple come and mark Gas all the way to the house. However, they mark Water, Cable TV, Phone and Sewer only to the property line. But good plumber should be able to tell you where your water and sewer pipes are...


Edit: I just called the number to verify. Number has been changed it to "811" to synchronize with other parts of the State and country...

Call plumbing department. Hate to disagree with everyone but some jurisdictions require a drawing of sewer lines and locations as part of the permit process, Fairfax County does. Your jurisdiction may or may not have a such records but the phone call is free.

My company always kept a set of "As-built" plans on file when we completed a new jobs. However, we never drew up the outside sewer and water lines. We always figured that if we showed where the sewer left the house plus the Building Departments map or sewer raisers a plumber should be able to figure it out by himself.
I never knew that Building Departments kept public records on private property but if Harold say that some do it's worth a shot. Thanks Harold! Tom

Maybe its because we are so close that over reaching loony bin of a federal government we have across the river, but it has come in handy a couple of times.
