    Can a probation officer
Can a probation officer "cut someone loose" once fines are paid? Or does the person still have to go to their court date. My boyfriend was sentenced to 60 days in a "halfway house" and had fines to pay. They said if all is complied when he goes back to court aug 2nd he is free. But his probation officer said he is free as soon as fines are paid up. The probation officer hates him and I'm afraid she is setting him up to miss court. Thanks

As far as I know from dealing with county probation and offenders who worked off their community service hours at our library, the offender has to return to court to finalize everything.

    Hello g:

Have him write the PO a letter in which he restates the conversation he had with his PO promising freedom at X time. Send the letter certified. If the PO IS setting him up, the letter will protect him. If not, the PO will be fine with it.

I would say if he has a court date, he call the court and verify if he has been removed from the schedule. As long as he is scheuled, the judge is gong to expect him.

The probation officer cannot just cut someone free as you put it. A Judge must sign a Termination of Probation Order for it to be legal. Have him show up on Aug 2nd to be sure he's free.
