Removed toilet and water leaked through can light
We were removing the toilet to tile the upstairs bathroom and water was dripping from the can light downstairs directly below. What concerns me is that there was a bad leak in the same spot when I bought the place and a plumber came and fixed it (I hope). That leak/repair was due to a shower stem leaking. I got a flashlight and looked directly into the hole in the floor (not the flange hole... there is a really bad "cut" hole in the floor about 6" off) and it seems to go directly to the ceiling. So what do I need to do to make sure there isn't another issue? Do I need to repair the hole, fill it in with something, or call a plumber? We are putting in 1/4" cement board over the really crappy sub floor and I was going to run it up to the toilet flange. The flange is a little high and should work. Thanks ! Julie

It happens. Space between the closet ring and sub-floor is not water sealed. When you were removing the toilet, water from the toilet trap splashed onto and around the closet ring making its way down to the ceiling and out through the can light. This problem will be solved once the toilet is reinstalled with new wax ring.
