    Tax exemption for H4
    Hello,

I have been on H-1B visa for 6 years and got married in 2005. My wife came to US on Oct 2006. Just wonder if I can claim her as dependent on my 2006 tax return? If so, how should I get her the tax ID?

No, you may NOT claim her as a dependent. However, you CAN file jointly with her, which is MUCH better because, in addition to her personal exemption, your standard deduction DOUBLES from $5,150 to $10,300.

You will need to fill out Form W-7 and send it with your tax return to aplly for her Individual Tax ID Number (ITIN).
