Maytag fridge compartment not cooling - repair or replace?
I have a 12-15 year old Maytag MTB2156BE (freezer on top) unit. Months ago, the fridge compartment was only cooling to 48 degrees or so. I removed the back panel from the freezer, and found tons of frost. In addition, frost was blocking the channel that cold air uses to travel from the freezer to the fridge. I thawed it all, replaced the freezer panel, and all was well. But now again, my fridge is not staying cool. After removing the back panel this time, there was frost again (not as much as before), and nothing blocking the channel. I defrosted it again, and this time, I can barely feel cool air reaching the fridge, where before I could feel it blow in more. Playing with the temperature slide bar doesn't have an effect. To me, there are two issues - one is the fact that the defrost ability is not working in the freezer. The other issue is that the cold air from the freezer seems to be inhibited in making it to the fridge to some degree. (The fan is working just fine - and the freezer unit is plenty cold). So, what can be done to repair this fridge, or would it just make sense to replace it?

Genisys- I will give you some of the causes that could be causeing you this trouble;; #1- Check under the bottom ,where the condenser coils are ; if they are dirty and covered with dust and fuzz, clean with a vacumn cleanerand a brush and check to see if the fan under there is running;; #2- freezing up is a good indication of being low on freon, may have to have it serviced ;; #3; you could have a faulty defrost timer or defrost heater; ;#4- the door seal may be leaking in warm air ,when door is closed or barley cracked open #5- the light may be staying on even after the dioor is closed, If so can cause frost to form inside;; this is just a few of the causes; the only way to really find out is to call a appliance service person to check it out or devorce the fridge;; ha ha just kidding , but to be serious ; it may end up cheaper to buy a new one ; I don't know what they charge for a service call in your local; so this is going to have to be your decission;;NOTE the coil on the bottom should be cleanesd at least every other month;; ;I hope that I have helped you out in some way , let me know ;;Have a great day and a better tomorrow and GOD BLESS;; F.B.E.
