Exhusband, daughter & I paying for her college, subtract scholarship money first?
My exhusband, daughter and I are paying for her college, a third each. Right now my daughter does not have a good paying job, babysitting neighbor girl until school is out, mostly for gas money. She has worked really hard on essays for scholarships. She is going to receive three scholarships. One for her grades from her college and the other two she sent essays in. Her scholarship money, should we subtract that first, then divide it by three from her schooling bills? Also, I didn't know if her book fees should be added for the three of us? We are from Indiana. And we have not discussed this in detail. What are your thoughts or the law? Thanks, vlgray88

Unless there's some sort of child support ordering dictating who pays what, its really a family decision. Is she going straight to a 4 year school or starting at a community or junior college? I think the fact that it looks like she'll be paying for some of her schooling but having you and her father to help her is great. I'm in college, and the thought of having to pay for school entirely alone used to terrify me. But I also don't know if I would appreciate it as much if I were just having everything handed to me. So what do you all agree is fair and reasonable? Talking about details is important. Books are ridiculously expensive, so I'm sure your daughter will appreciate it you and her father are willing and able to help with the costs. Has she filled out the fafsa yet? If not, she should. She may be able to get more financial aid that will help all of you out.
