Milk bones and antibiotics
My dog is being given the antibiotic Doxycycline to treat a tick borne infection. It says to have no dairy products. Can he have milk bones?

Milk bones are not made of milk. They don't have milk in them, or were they processed with any type of dairy product.
Just don't give your dog yogurt based treats or cheese.

The ingredients on the box say milk, that's why I ask.

If your concerned, then don't feed them. If the ingredients say that milk is added to the mixture, then go with your gut instinct and not feed your dog milk bones. I doubt there is actual cow milk in them. Dogs can't digest cow milk. If anything it could be goats milk.
Hell live without milk bones for awhile. You can always upgrade his biscuits to a higher quality biscuit such as old mother hubbard or wellness. The ingredients are a lot better with no mystery milk.

Or you can make your own dog treats.
LOVE this website:
Homemade Dog Treat Recipes!
I didn't see that there was milk in the ingredients, but I did see some calcium products, but over all they really aren't that good for your dog anyway.
Here is another site if you are interested in making dog treats, gives you tips on what to avoid.

Stay away from the garlic ones. On the first site that Bell posted they have a recipe for Liver treats calling for 12-14 garlic cloves:eek:
On the second link that Bell posted they have a list of what is toxic to dogs. 'Toxic Food List' scroll down a little. You can click on the items and they tell you what parts are toxic or why they are.:)
I copied 6 recipes from the first list, that I will be trying this week.:D
Edit: I couldn't rep Cats or Bell... but the first recipe Cats mentioned is great. He gave it to me a while ago.

JD, thanks for posting that, I never even thought to mention that. I didn't even notice that there was garlic in some of them.
There is a lot of controversy on garlic and if it is toxic or not. My dogs eat things with garlic in them, but in moderation. It can cause nervous system issues, not to mention horrendous gas!

No Problem, I've been making my dogs treats for a couple years now, less expensive and they like them better.
Thanks for giving me a couple more recipes:D

Does the Milkbone formula differ by size or something? My dogs like the large and they do list milk in the ingredients.
