Shoplifting, civil recovery letter, and criminal record.
I was going through rough emotional times, which lead me to the stupid decision to shoplift. I got out of the store, and couldn't stand myself. As I started walking back across the parking lot the store's security guards approached me and I went back to the store and gave back what I took. The security thanked me for being compliant, but said they still have to take my information. I asked if this was going to go on my criminal record and they said no. They took my drivers' license information and called the police to confirm that I was a first time offender. They then took my picture and told me I could not return to the store for 2 years. No police was called. This was in mid march.
I just received a Letter of Civil recovery asking me to pay $300. It also says I might or might not be charged by the Crown. I think I can manage to pay the fine, but what I'm wondering is if this will end up on my criminal record, or any other databases. If it does, then for how long? I'm a university student and I want to know how this will effect me.
I'm from Canada BC if that helps, in case they have different regulations.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hello No:

A civil action will NOT appear on your criminal record.

But the letter also says "I might or might not be charged by the Crown". What are the chances of that happening?
