Resident alien - internship/income from another state
    Hello,

I have been in the US on F-1 visa since Aug. 2004. I have a few concerns regarding filing my tax returns for 2009 and I am hoping I can get some suggestions. This was my situation last year.

    1. I was employed at the University of Utah between Jan. to May and from Sep. to Dec.

    2. I did an internship in California (while on CPT) during the months June to August, during which I didn't maintain a residence in Utah.

Since I have stayed in the US for more than 5 years on F-1 visa, I think I will henceforth be considered a resident alien for tax purposes. But my concern is regarding my status in the two states - UT and CA.

    1. Since I moved out of Utah for 3 months, do I file my returns as a part-time resident of UT and a non-resident of CA?

    2. Or am I considered a resident of UT since the move was temporary and I intended to return and hence, file my returns as a resident of UT and a non-resident of CA?

Any inputs will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    1. Federal return-- you are resident.
    2. CA you are part year resident. Report income earned in CA.
    3. UT report total income for the year. Claim credit for taxes paid to CA. Your U.S. Tax Return: Working or Living in Two or More states
