    State tax - Non resident alien or resident alien
    Hello,

    I am currently on my OPT and I lived in AL (worked jan and Feb) until June and moved to MA (working here). I filed my taxes using form 40 (for AL) and form 1 NR/PY (part year resident) for MA. Was this correct or should I have filed Non resident for both? For federal I filed 1040 NR. Thank you!
    PS: why these taxes are so confusing!?

    You are part year resident of AL and part year resident of MA.

    On the AL return you will report all the income you earned while you were in AL. It can even be income from non-AL sources.
    Similarly for MA.

1040NR -> 1040: Non-resident Alien to Resident Alien? [ 1 Answers ]

I've heard a rumor that after 5 years of being an international student filling out 1040NRs, you are supposed to start filling out a 1040 instead of a 1040NR. I've been in the States since 2001 (F-1 undergrad, then 1 year of F-1 OPT, and now with a new F-1 for grad school), 6 years so far and...
