I am trying to replace the inducer motor after having a fault- 6 flashes. I have the new replacement, but can't get the older piece out. How do I remove it?

How do you replace the inducer fan in the Carrier 48gs model? I have a replacement, but I can get it out of the equipment.

IMPORTANT: Before you work on your unit, pull the electrical disconnect and turn off the gas supply.

This is a very time consuming task. If you are accustomed to working with electrical and mechanical equipment you can do this. Otherwise, I suggest that you contact a certified technician in your area.

You have to replace the inducer fan motor and the blower wheel. This is done by removing the housing on which the motor is mounted. Make note of all connections first before removing them to ensure that you know where everything is connected. Take a photograph. The schematics for this unit are readily available online, as are the start-up instructions. Gently remove the motor connections to the controller board and the capacitor. Disconnect the hall effect sensor from the motor. Remove the grounding connection. Remove the screw attaching the IGC controller module panel to the left hand side of the unit. Remove the 2 screws above the controller module that hold the heat shield above the motor. Remove the housing for the 24v wiring. Gently push the panel up to remove the heat shield (be cautious not to pinch any wires). Then you are able to get to the housing mounting screws. This requires a small ratchet wrench that has a flexible head that can shift from 0 to 90 degrees. Remove the housing mounting screws and maneuver the housing and motor out between the controller panel and the gas trane. This is tricky but do-able. Disconnect the blower wheel with the set screws. If it is fused, use a hack saw to cut the shaft. Clean up the housing. If it is far gone, replace this as well. Re-assemble the housing, motor and blower wheel being certain that the clearance is correct between the housing screws and the housing edge so that the wheel is free turning when remounted to the unit. There is very little tolerance. Be certain to utilize both set screws when attaching the blower wheel and placing them directly on the flats of the motor shaft. Reverse the procedure to put it all back together. Carrier suggests removing the gas trane. Don't. Only service techs should do this. When everything has been reconnected, remove the outside shield revealing the blower wheel. Be certain that the blower wheel moves freely when carefully jostled before starting up the unit. This would be a very costly mistake if it is not. Follow the start-up instructions after everything is all buttoned up - OR - contact a certified technician in your area for start-up assistance.
