We just bought a 35 year old house with original plumbing and fixtures. We need to replace the toilet. It's leaking but I am unable to shut off the supply line to the toilet. I've turned it as far to the right as possible but it won't turn any further. I've tried pliers. I'm afraid to break it. What do I do / how do I repair it?

Hi Susan...

Best bet here will probably be to shut off the main water supply shutoff at the water meter and/or pump. Then open a faucet that is lower than the bathroom toilet and you should be all set. When you refill the water main, be sure to purge the air/water out of a tubspout or laundry faucet so that aerators at other faucets don't get clogged.

After you make repairs to the toilet you can set some time aside for next weekend and replace the faulty shutoff at the toilet... ;)

What kind of shutoff do you have there... pic. 1,2,3, or 4? Pop back if you need help changing the toilet shutoff...

Find the main shut-off valve to the house or apartment and turn it off , and replace the supply line valve while your doing the toilet. Good luck

I think Mark explained very well and follow his advice, S/O the main repair the toilet and replace the angle valve under the toilet tank, to replace or repair the angle valve see the Image below, Thanks.
