Bad injector, bad gas, timing belt failure. Burned valves. There is a starting point.

Check EGR valve and associated control components. The EGR connects intake to exhaust. When they fail open, it makes a shaky mess.

I had an defective MAF sensor do a similar thing. While it was starting, the car seemed to run OK only while the starter was engaged. One the starter was disengaged, the engine ran so rough it died immedately. Disconnecting the sensor caused it to run in limp mode. It may have only happened once the car was hot enough to run in closed loop. Didn't test, just fixed. It wasn't a Honda.

Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor, which affects fuel injector pulse width. The ECT Sensor is a temperature dependent resistor (thermistor), whose resistance decreases as the engine coolant temperature increases. It provides a richer mixture when cold, leaner mixture when hot. They become corroded, due to not changing the coolant frequently enough, flood the engine, and waste a tremendous amount of fuel. The ECT Sensor is the two-wire sensor, located beneath the distributor.

Here's what it looks like and costs:

2000 Honda Civic Rough Idle [ 4 Answers ]

I have a 2000 Honda Civic. Recently it started idling rough and low. I also have started to notice that it lacks power and surges when it is in overdrive. It runs great and still gets about 29 mpg other than that. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.
