I have a LG flatron monitor which is 3 years old. Some time back a technician placed an antivirus scanner into my PC and then after a few days the entire screen became black. Till date my monitor has not shown coloured display. I need to keep it on for a very long time and only then can I view everything in black and white. Otherwise my monitor has become completely dark . What do I do?

It sounds like those two events aren't related... an antivirus scanner doesn't really have anything to do with the brightness or color of your screen. Have you tried the monitor on a different computer? I would try that, to rule out the computer itself... because it sounds to me like you might have a bad monitor.

OK I shall try that out as well. But then how's it that the visibility impoves after about an hour or so if it's the comp that's at fault?

How do I run an anti virus software at home all by myself? Can I download it directly from th net? Is there any comp specific variety as per your machine. I previously had a quick heal antivirus which now seems to have expired.

In addition to the commercial programs, of which there are many, there are a number of antivirus programs that can be downloaded and installed without cost (almost all for home use only -- not for business use). Here are three that I'm aware of.

Personally, I like AVG - the free version.

Please note that if you have another antivirus program already on your computer, you MUST remove that before trying to install a new antivirus program. In general, antivirus programs may compete with each other and are not generally considered to be compatible with each other.

These antivirus programs run all of the time. There is always a feature to ask it to scan the computer or files manually, and you can set up automatic scans.

Anti-virus programs aren't the whole story. There are other "baddies" that can infect your computer. People would call them viruses, but the anti-virus companies don't put them in the same league. Generically, we call them "Malware". I suggest running MalwareBytes occasionally to weed out these things.
