I need to change a shutoff valve for my backyard spigot because it is rotting away and leaking. The spigot is located up on my basement wall right up against the poured cement wall. It looks like the valve is attached to a 3/4 inch steel pipe that goes outside to the spigot.
I would like to replace the entire pipe with copper but I don't think I can get it out of the wall. I figure I'll have to chip around the poured concrete to get some clearance but I don't know what to do next. The rest of the piping in the house on the other side of the valve is 1/2"copper. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. (I have a photo to make it clear if someone has an address I can send it to. It appears to be too large to send as an attachment)

You can post pictures here. Click on the "Go Advanced" button. After you're in the advanced section, click on "Manage Attachments". A pop-up window will appear that allows you to upload files from your computer. You can load pictures into photo programs or into Paint.exe. In Paint, click IMAGE | STRETCH AND SKEW. Under Horizontal and Vertical enter a fraction less than 100% (enter the same number into both boxes or the aspect ratio will change). You can shrink it down to any nominal size. Also, save the picture as a .JPG file before uploading it (smaller that way).

To Send Attachments
Make your post and scroll down to Manage Attachments click on that and then click Browse This will allow you to get into your computer and retrieve your picture and upload it to The Plumbing Page.

Take a hammer and beat the old galvanized pipe through to to outside. You may then convert to 1/2" copper and install your hose bib. Good luck, Tom

What was wrong with my solution?

Take a hammer and beat the old galvanized pipe through to to outside. You may then convert to 1/2" copper and install your hose bib
