Root Canal AFTER 3 unit bridge
I've been dealing with this for almost 2 years now. Had tooth pulled, tried implant, implant failed, got 3 unit bridge (this is in the front of my mouth). Have had one root canal on one of the anchor teeth, now need root canal on the other anchor tooth (one of my front teeth). The problem is that my bridge is now cemented in and endodontist says that if he breaks my $3,000 bridge, it's not his responsibility! Is anyone familiar with this? Would appreciate any advice, because I'm not agreeing to that. Should I have been told about the possibility of 2 root canals prior to having my teeth prepped?

    Thanks for any advice!

    Hi barbidahl,

It is not uncommon for teeth to need root canals AFTER crowns are placed. I think the endodontist is just protecting himself in regards to the bridge breaking. There is no reason the bridge should break if he is going to drill through the crown in to the tooth.

Perhaps you should see another endodontist who isn't afraid he'll break the bridge.

    Good luck.

A bridge or a crown shaves down the OUTSIDE of the tooth... a root canal involves drilling a hole into the INSIDE of he tooth. Guess what is left? Sometimes nothing!! Depending on the aggressiveness of the bridge preparation (which, if you needed a root canal after, may have been extensive), the root canal may only leave a shell of tooth remaining which can't support the bridge. Not fun... sometimes we can put in a post into the canal which will help avoid the breakage problem, but it may happen. The dentist should have told you that some (approx 1/20) crowned teeth need root canals. The only definitive answer would be to get a new bridge after the root canals.
