Stink from a leaky vent pipe
I am redoing my kitchen and when I tried to take the sink out the vent pipe literally came apart, as though it was not even attached. There was a terrible smell in the kitchen and we thought it was the cabinets. We took out the cabinets, and they did smell, we also took out the walls. When I lifted the tile from the floor the smell got worse. We called in a plumber and he said that it didn't smell like sewer, it smelled like wet dog. I don't know what that could be from.
I bought Odor-xit and will try spraying the entire kitchen. I have to say the subfloor still smells but I'm not sure if it is from the original leaky vent pipe or not. The break in the pipe was under the subfloor, so it's possible the smell got into the wood. I'm going crazy without a kitchen but afraid to close the walls until I find the source of odor. Unfortunately the Odor-xit box says it doesn't get rid of wet dog smell. Any suggestions. |

We hired a plumber and he put in all new pipe from the main vent pipe back up to the kitchen sink, so I know it is no longer producing a smell. I have no idea how long the people before us had this smell but they were in their 80s. The house was neglected for at least 20 years. My first guess is that the subfloor absorbed the smell. The cabinets absorbed the smell and we threw them out in the shed. When you go in the shed you can smell it.
They also had mice in the walls. I don't see any evidence of a nest in the kitchen walls, although we did find a dead mouse in the wall, long dead. But there were mice droppings in the insulation in the basement ceiling below when we took it down, so you know the mice had to urinate somewhere. Would that produce a "wet dog" smell? Last question. Are there people you can hire to investigate odors? It would be worth it. We are putting in a $25,000 kitchen and need it to be odor free. Thanks for your help. |
