Nadine, the drain pipe is held in by large fat washer and possible a nut. It would be great if you could post a photo of it so we know exactly what you are dealing with...

What happened is that your drain seal got loose and as a result the drain pipe fell bellow the floor. It needs to be raised through the hole and reattached. Is the shower on 2nd floor ?

But for now: do not use the shower or you will flood your bathroom and possibly your neighbors as well.

Ok, there is chance that you can glue it in w/o any tearing up your shower.

Question: when you look inside the hole in the shower pan, can you see the Hub of the P-trap inside ? It should be full of water. If so, than do the following:

    1. Remove water from trap ( use shop-vac)
    2. Put small dry cloth on broom stick, secure it, stick it inside the trap and clean it dry
    3. Dry test the length of the pipe that goes in. If it seems to be too short, go to local Home Depot and buy longer piece, like 24" long. It will make your job very easy.
    4. Apply ABS / PVC glue on the Hub inside the shower drain opening. Apply glue on end of the pipe
    5. Stick the pipe in, push it until you feel it slipped all the way in and twist it 180 degrees.
    6. Let dry for 30 minutes
    7. Install drain seal and seal drain as per manufacturer's recommendations.

Photo would be very, very helpful. Until then, I am just guessing and hoping for the best situation... :-D
