Honda Accord cutting out 1996 110,000 miles 2ltr
Have had weird problems with my honda accord aerodeck 1996, 2-litre 110,000 miles, it started by cutting out and starting staight away. Then it got progressively worse, cutting out and taking up to 25minutes to restart. The garage has changed the ignition switch, fuel filter, fuel pump relay, swapped over the distributer from another car and still the problems got worse, all that it left now is the ECU unit, Honda tested it and said it was the distributer/coil but we swapped it from another car and got the same problem. I spoke to ECUdoctor and they said that the ECU on this car is very reliable and would not cause this type of problem, can anyone help?before I scrap the car?!

But I though the coil was IN the distributor, is the distributor the same as the Ignition control module?

Ok I have checked what the Ignition Control Module is and I think, it... and the coil is a part of the Distributor Assembly which I said we swapped over with another car but we STILL had the problem of cutting out, how do you explain that?
Thanks

Yes, both the ICM and coil are inside the distributor housing. These are problematic components that I recommend replacing every 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first. You tried installing another distributor. Was it the correct one for your vehicle? How do we know that it was any good? Was it a genuine Honda distributor or an aftermarket distributor. I've seen nothing but problems with even new aftermarket distributors for Hondas.
If the Check Engine Light comes on for 2 seconds and then goes out, when the ignition switch is turned to ON (Position II), the odds are that the problem resides with the distributor. My advice is to first install a new ICM and coil in your existing distributor. Then, if the problem persists, install the new ICM and coil in a new genuine Honda distributor housing. Otherwise, just install a new complete genuine Honda distributor now.
You are free to follow the advice from whomever you want.

Thanks for your help
I have asked Honda and they did not know what an ICM was! (I am in England), they said the other component was an Ignitor Unit, as far as you know, is this the same thing?
When we swapped over the distributor from another working car we still got exactly the same problems with stopping but the engine light stayed on all the time! So it was obviously the wrong distributor, but I am surprised that we still got exactly the same stopping symptoms

Ignitor is the same thing as the Ignition Control Module (ICM). If you install a new ignitor and coil, I believe your problem will be solved. Basically, it's a simple, straight-forward, and very common problem. Once you get the parts, your Honda should be running fine again in 45 minutes. Easy job.. . Just follow my instructions above.
