UK citizen studying in California - can I work self-employed
Any advice please? I am considering studying for an MA part time in California - not living on campus - I think I need an F1 Visa - I work as a self employed counsellor in UK - would I be able to do the same there to supplement my income?

Also would I be able to rent an apartment?

Plus - I have a drink driving conviction but now have my licence back and attended an Alcohol Awareness Course (aged 58 and usually a responsible citizen) will this preclude me from entering the USA to study for two years?

    Thank you everyone!

Just as in the UK, international students are limited to what sort of work, and how many hours they can work, while on a student visa. This site will give you some more info:

Study in the USA - Working in the USA

Good luck with your studies... it would be a wonderful opportunity!

Simple rules... no full- time or part-time or contract job with any US employer as students are not allowed to obtain SSN. You can rent apartment, open bank account, and obtain driver's license.

The only issue is you must prove ties to your home country... job, family, etc.

Good luck and welcome to California... sales tax is 9.75% now... :D
