    Drainage pipework.
I've called in a drainage company to replace drains that were blocked by roots. Drains were laid about 1880. The main drain that was blocked is the rest bend. After the rest bend there was a vent pipe (about 6 feet to surface) where you can see water draining through a U bend on its way to road drain (about 15 feet from road). The repair men say this vent is not necessary and are replacing it with a straight connection and doing away with the vent. Is this OK ? I wonder why it was placed there in the first place if it was not necessary.

What's a "rest bend"? Vent? They told you it was a vent and unnecessary? So they removed it? First off we don't "vent" sewers that run from the house to the street. What they removed sounds like a cleanout. I hope that wasn't the only one. Because sooner or ;later you're going to hafta snake that line. We would have brought it to grade and installed a clean out cover, (see image).

Agree with Tom: it is clean out - and you do not want to eliminate it.

I am not clear on that "U" bend you metioned - but pipe should go straight, downslopa, all the way to the street. No "U" bends needed...

Milo, The "U bend" he's talking about is a "running trap",(see image). They are sometimes use to seal off the house drainage system from the city sewer.
I haven' seen one installed in all the 53 years I've lived here. Regards, tom
