Bath tub drain
My sisters bath tub drain is a pop up type (turn right it closes, turn left it pops open). We need to take the plug out to clean. How do I do this?

(the one with the nipple and set screw)
Unscrew the set screw and pull up. This removes the pull up section. Did you wish to remove thje drain from the bathtub itself? Regards, Tom

I only want the plug out, my nieces have long hair and it has balled up to clog the drain. I do not see nor feel a set screw anywhere.

Speedball posted three pics. Just to clarify, which one is yours? Top, bottom left, or bottom right. Either way, you may need to use a pair of channel lock pliers to turn the stopper in a counter clockwise direction. You may want to place a towel over the area you put your pliers on, so that you don't scratch the finish.

One more time! See the set screw? The set screw sees you! It's there, (see image) unscrew and pull up. Good luck, Tom

Even though I show my blond roots sometimes, I am pretty handy AND I do have a little common sense. Unless the set screw is flush it is not there.

It looks like the one on top, yet I can not feel nor see a set screw. The drain is in a place where I can not get eye level to it so I have to rely on touch and I only feel a smooth stem. I don't want to use any pliers until I know for sure that it won't break anything.

If yours looks like the one on top in the post about, then I have something for you to try. Turn the top and let the drain drop down now use a pair of pliers with a towel and gently turn the very top knob counter clockwise, this should unscrew the post going into the drain once you get that out you can then see how or where the set screw is.

Hi all:
There is two other kinds that look like that drain but don't have a set screw... One is called a ROLLER BALL DRAIN. Here, you need a pair of needlenose pliers to hold the bottom stem while you unscrew the top off with a pair of pliers... Check out the picture. Does your drain have nubs sticking down abit like in the pic.
If so, proceed as instructed. If not, then the last type that looks like this type simply has a top that unscrews off... try to unscrew the top off with a pair of pliers like letmetellu suggested... ;)
Let us know what you find...
