    1040 itemized deductions
    Hello,

I have a question on schedule A & B itemized deduction work sheet for 1040. I'm filing a "joint" return since, I got married in 2008. Could you please clarify my question below?

Can I itemize my deductions and take the standard deduction for my spouse?

    Please let me know.

    Thank you

You must both itemize on a joint filing or you must both take the standard deduction. You cannot just "mix and match".

Or you can file married filing separately. If you do this, you can take deductions and he can file for the standard deduction.

If you file separate returns, and if one spouse itemizes then other must also itemize.
