    Landlords - what can they take from my deposit?
    I moved out of a property 3 weeks ago and I'm still waiting for the agent to get back to me with what deductions they are going to take from my deposit. (personaly they are acting like money grabbers and don't deserve a penny of it) still...
    I had to take out contents insurance on the property when I moved in however I did not renew the insurance on the last month of residency and now they are saying they will take the last months worth of insurance from the deposit - can they do this even though I don't live there anymore?
    Also I received the paperwork on where the deposit was being held however I have since lost the paperwork - have I got the right to ask for a copy from the agent again or do I go to the company where the deposit is being held?
    Information and advice would be appreciated.

    What State? In general, yes, if you were required to carry insurance and did not the landlord can obtain insurance on your behalf while you are in possession of the property (still under a rental agreement or lease) and charge you the premium.

    Im actually from England so the law might be slightly different. However they didn't tell me about the extra charge for insurance until I had given the keys back so I'm not actually in an agreement anymore.

    If you agreed to carry insurance, then you have to carry insurance. If the landlord paid for the last month's insurance then they are entitled to reimbursement; it doesn't matter if you, the landlord or Curious George has the keys to the place. What matters is what your lease says.

    Have you asked for any sort of itemization of what monies are going to be deducted from your deposit other than the insurance premium? You need to make this request in writing, no email or phone call.
