Unfit parents and an unborn child
I live in the midwest and my sister has gotten herself into a real pickle. She is single, has no job, is 6 months pregnant and an idiot. She will not listen to reason. Her current boyfriend it the father of the child, but he has had over 8 jobs in 5 months. There is no stability for the child. They do not have the money for their rent let alone to support this bundle of joy that will be here soon. The boyfriend has also physically cheated on her physically at least 3 times. We don't know if she has contracted any diseases or anything else yet. We can not convince her that she needs to leave. I don't care if she ruins her life, but neither of them are stable emotionally or mentally. Both have been on medication for depression. What can be done to try to protect this child as it comes into the world?

Maybe you could consult a social worker or child services for advice on this situation. Good luck.

Unless she is doing drugs while pregnant she can't be considered an unfit parent yet. I really don't know anything that you can do because as long as they have a roof over the babies head, the utilities on, clothed and fed, and not abusing the baby they really won't be considered unfit. I have seen much worse and they manage even though it may be what we would call not a good life.

Child protective services, but being poor does not mean they will be a bad parent
While not my approved life style, I know many families living in the projects on government assistance that raise wonderful kids

Exactly FR_Chuck.
I raised my 4 kids alone on less than $1,200 a month. Their dad turned out to be a real dead beat and rarely even saw them. They turned out great and three are in the military,

All you can really do at this point is talk to the nurse at the hospital when she is in labor. Let the nurse know of the situation, it will then be the nurses' responsibility to call in a social services consultation wherein they will maintain contact with your sister after she and the baby are discharged from the hospital. This person is educated to make decisions regarding whether the parents are unfit.

So, I'm the aunt of the unborn child, he is to be due sometime in June 2007. The mother is unfit, I think she drinks, she hangs around people who smoke and party around her.
