Replaced thermostat - now no hear or a/c!

My 15-yr old thermostat has weird programming quirks that I got tired of so I bought a new one and installed it. I made sure to follow the instructions to the letter and am quite sure that the wiring was correct.

However, when I turned the breakers in my main house breaker panel back on neither the heat or air conditioning work, only room temperature air comes out of the furnace. There's a heat pump outside which doesn't turn on either (it used to turn on for a/c).

I think it's a breaker problem because I put the old thermostat back in and still have the same problem. I can provide model numbers of everything if need be. Obviously I'm new to HVAC type stuff.

Often there is a fuse/breaker near the outside unit. Did you check to see if they were still good.

Yes, there is a breaker which I turned off and on again and it didn't change anything. Also, one of the pipes from the heat pump outside is cold and the fan blades spin freely if I move them by hand. I switched the house breakers that control the heat pump and furnace off and on, too.

I don't understand how one of the pipes to you condensing unit is cold if it is not running. Is anything outside running. One other thing, heat pumps go through a defrost stage and sometime they even quit working.

OK, so once more resetting all my breakers the heat pump has mysteriously started working and I have A/C again. I'm going to test if heat works and then I will be swapping out the old thermostat for the new one.

I'll post an update when that's done, and in the meantime thanks for your help jasv and letmetellu.

I'm here too :) Thermostat still working fine. Heat pump needed a new capacitor during this summer's heat wave, though.
