Charlotte's Web would be one that I can think of that has a sad ending.
I'm hopeful that others will come along to address your question.
Thanks!

Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
Where the Red Fern Grows - Wilson Rawls
Gone with the Wind - Margaret Mitchell (note: some people don't think the ending of that was sad, but I personally do)
Dr. Faustus - Christopher Marlowe
I don't know if it counts, but any of Shakespeare's tragedies have REALLY unhappy endings.
Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Ablom
1984 - George Orwell. This one isn't sad as IN "boohoo"--it's more that it's sad because of its commentary on the state of the world.
I'm trying to think of the books that had me crying my eyes out at the end--and I know I've read literally dozens of them. However, until I can scan over my book list at home (I'm still at work), I won't be able to add to this list.

A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry - The whole book is sad and the ending is worse... It's a really good read.

I think The Notebook is sad. It's romantic and sweet, and all, but oh, so sad.

"Love Story" is a classic. "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." A movie is currently in process for that one.

I used to read Harlequin romance novels when I lived in the US, but I left all my books behind when I moved to Europe approx. 10 years ago, but there were a few of the stories that stuck out in my head, but I don't remember the names of them. If anyone could help me, or direct me to where I might...
Old romance novels
[ 6 Answers ]
I enjoy reading the old mills and boon or harlequin novels. My favorite author is Sara Seale. Can anyone give me names of some of the other older authors. I don't enjoy the ones that have explicit sexual encounters. I enjoy the ones that are clean and wholesome. Can anyone help. Thanks
